Song of the Week [POP]: Sky Ferreira - 99 Tears

19 year old Sky Ferreira is one of the most interesting pop star around at the moment. There, i said it. At the age of 13 she began posting demos on her Myspace and soon found a small level of fame as an 'Internet Celebrity' who quickly developed a small yet devoted fan base despite not having the resources that other developing singers usually have. Then just before she turned 15 what would be considered unthinkable happened, Sky took it upon herself to email BloodShy and Advant (the producers of the Britney Spears album 'Blackout' who had just scored a worldwide smash with 'Piece of Me') and asked them if they were interested in producing her. Much to the surprise of Ferreira, they said yes.

Fast forward 3 years and Sky Ferriera is prepping for the release of her debut album after a series of push backs that saw it go from the 01/01/11 to an as of yet unannounced date, but according to Sky herself it will be out sooner than we think. While we wait for the album (rumored to be called 'Cry Baby') Sky took it upon herself to release a small EP to keep her fans waiting. The CD is called 'As If!' and was released on the 22nd of March 2011. While it seems i may be a bit late with calling one of its tracks the song of the week, According to various sources and stanscan this may yet be given the single release to try and raise a little more hype leading up to the album. Never a bad thing...

The song itself is quite an interesting pick for a single, but by no means a bad one. Imagine a younger, sluttier, drunker  Britney Spears during the 'BoMT' era singing a song about getting revenge on a past lover through various different means and that basically sums up the idea behind '99 Tears'. Produced by another long time collaborator Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, Britney Spears etc.) the song is quite a bounce little tune more along the lines of previous single 'Obsession' as opposed to 'One'. While the production remains a key aspect to this song, the lyrics itself and Sky's delivery and vocal diversity should not be overlooked under any circumstance. For someone of just 19, Sky Ferreira is able to out sing most of her peers and while her voice may not be the strongest out there, there is something about it which packs a hell of a punch and it able to deliver quite a childish sounding song in a classy, mature way where the majority of her peers would have failed rather embarrassingly. Well done Sky, and here's looking forward to the ever elusive album.

Best Bit: The moment in the chorus when the 'Cry Baby Cry Baby CRY' hook is sung, the base suddenly gets heavier and the vocals more distorted all adding up to create a pretty amazing pop moment
Shit Bit: The production can sometimes swallow up Sky's voice and make it difficult to make out just exactly what she is saying.
RATING: 5 out of 5

Listen to the track below. Available on iTunes now. Sky Ferreira's as of yet untitled debut album will be released later on in the year.
